Japantown Cultural District.
A project of the Japantown Task Force
The Japantown Cultural District, a project of the Japantown Task Force, works to keep San Francisco's Japantown culturally alive, economically healthy and genuinely itself, for Japanese and Japanese American communities and for everyone who walks through it.
What they do.
Formed in 2018, it was the first of San Francisco's eight Cultural Districts funded by the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development.
Japantown's story runs deep. San Francisco was the main entry point for Japanese immigrants in the 1800s, and after the 1906 earthquake the community built a neighborhood of residents and businesses spanning about 40 blocks of the Western Addition. It was displaced twice, first by the World War II incarceration in 1942 and again by redevelopment in the 1960s and 70s, and it rebuilt both times.
Their Visitor Center is upstairs in the Japan Center East Mall, two minutes from the cinema door. Stop in and say hi.
On October 15
The Task Force team shared our screening on Instagram and in their newsletter, and put our posters up at the Visitor Center. A lot of you heard about tonight because of them.
